Only Tenderness of the Wolves screenwriter/star Kurt Raab based his screenplay for Lommel’s picture on reports and testimony from Haarmann’s actual trial. ![]() Just before Fassbinder began production on his working class masterpiece, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, the hard-living auteur produced Tenderness of the Wolves for Lommel – a horrific rumination on the complacency of blue collar Germans to live amongst evil, half-believing the atrocities served a sense of “public good”.įritz Haarmann was one of the infamous inspirations for Hans Beckert, the serial murderer at the center of Fritz Lang’s 1931 stone classic, M. But before he was piling virtually irredeemable trash into a treacherous filmography, Lommel was the protégé of New German Cinema luminary, Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Back then, he was churning out exploitative drive-in trash such as Cocaine Cowboys – starring Jack Palance as a corrupt tour manager for a drug-smuggling rock band, and Andy Warhol as himself – as well as the surreal, nonsensical slasher, The Boogeyman. Notorious for modern DTV schlock such as BTK Killer, Curse of the Zodiacand DC Sniper(starring the one and only Ken Foree), Lommel’s a director who’s been comfortable taking a genre paycheck since the late '70s/early '80s. ![]()
